Ian Hodder: Archaeology as Long-Term History

Archaeology as Long-Term History

Description

In marked contrast with the anthropological and cross-cultural approaches that featured so prominently in archaeological research this contributory volume emphasises the archaeological significance of historical method and philosophy. Drawing particularly on the work of R. G. Collingwood, the contributors show that the notion of 'history seen from within' is a viable approach that can be applied in ethnoarchaeology and in both historic and prehistoric archaeology. There is a discussion of short, medium and long-term historical structures in relation to social events generating observed material culture patterning. Examination of the relationship between structure and event within historical contexts leads to insights into the interdependence of continuity and change, and into the nature of widely recognised processes such as acculturation, diffusion and migration.

The Collected Fantasies series presents all of Smith’s fiction chronologically. Authorized by the author’s estate and endorsed by Arkham House, the stories in this series are accompanied by detailed background notes from editors Scott Connors and Ron Hilger, who in preparation for this collection meticulously compared original manuscripts, various typescripts, published editions, and Smith’s own notes and letters. Their efforts have resulted in the most definitive and complete collection of the author’s work to date. In the near future, America is crushed by a financial crisis and our patient Chinese creditors may just be ready to foreclose on the whole mess. Then Lenny Abramov, son of an Russian immigrant janitor and ardent fan of "printed, bound media artifacts" (aka books), meets Eunice Park, an impossibly cute Korean American woman with The Ethics and Educational Research download ebook pdf a major in Images and a minor in Assertiveness. Second Firsts: How to Let Go of Your Grief and Start Your New Life download ebook

Christina Rasmussen: Second Firsts: How to Let Go of Your Grief and Start Your New Life

Second Firsts: How to Let Go of Your Grief and Start Your New Life

Description

A total revision of the stages of grief, Christina Rasmussen's new book takes a radical approach to bereavement by using neuroscience to honour your past and consider your future positively. After studying to become a therapist and crisis intervention counsellor - even doing her master's thesis on the stages of bereavement - Christina Rasmussen thought she knew what grieving was. But it wasn't until losing her husband to cancer in her early 30s that she truly understood the depths of sorrow and pain that come with it. Using the knowledge she gained while wading through her own grieving process and researching hundreds of neuroscience books, Rasmussen began to look at these experiences in a new way. She realized that grieving plunges you into a gap between worlds - the world before trauma and the world after trauma. She also realized how easy it is to become lost in this gap. In Second Firsts, Rasmussen walks readers through a proven process that helps them break the spiral of pain and create a safe space for their post-grief life to enter. Her method, which she has used successfully online and offline with thousands of clients, is based on the science of neuroplasticity and focuses on consciously releasing pain in ways that both honour suffering and rewire the brain to experience the world in a new way. With understanding and empathy, Rasmussen uses practical exercises and stories drawn from her own life and the lives of her clients to guide readers through five stages of opening up to life. With this knowledge, readers can come out of grief as a new person and start to experience life again - essentially for the first time.

Neale Donald Walsch: Tomorrow's God: Our Greatest Spiritual Challenge

Tomorrow's God: Our Greatest Spiritual Challenge

Description

The way the human race acts now will shape - or break - all our futures. Neale Donald Walsch's dialogue with God continues, with a look forward to the New Spirituality that we all need to embrace right now - and how exactly we can apply this new way of thought to our lives. Humankind persists in believing that we are simply immune to self-destruction. In fact our behaviour threatens the whole of life as we know it. This challenging new book asks us to change the way we think about our faith and question our very beliefs, and shows us how we can do this within the framework of our everyday lives. This new spirituality will have an impact on the way we think about areas from TV and other mass media, to fashion, health and diet, and parenting and social mores. This book addresses age-old taboos, the mysteries of life, and ingrained ways of behaving, and provides us with the tools we need to redirect ourselves onto a new and infinitely better path. Powerful, inspiring and sometimes controversial, this book will help us to think again about all that we believe in, and to change our world for the better through changing our beliefs.

In the 1980s, a young adventurer and collector for a government library, Abdel Kader Haidara, journeyed across the Sahara Desert and along the Niger River, tracking down and salvaging tens of thousands of ancient Islamic and secular manuscripts that were crumbling in the trunks of desert shepherds. His goal: to preserve this crucial part of the world's patrimony in a gorgeous library. But then Al Qaeda showed up at the door. Joshua Hammer writes about how Haidara, a mild-mannered archivist from the legendary city of Timbuktu, became one of the world's greatest smugglers by saving the texts from sure destruction. With bravery and patience, Haidara organized a dangerous operation to sneak all 350,000 volumes out of the city to the safety of southern Mali. His heroic heist is a reminder that ordinary citizens often do the most to protect the beauty of their culture. Tomorrow's God: Our Greatest Spiritual Challenge free ebook His story is one of a man who, through extreme circumstances, discovered his higher calling and was changed forever by it.

Without my wife, he once noted, I wouldn t have written a single novel. Set in prewar Europe and postwar America, spanning much of the century, the story of the Nabokovs fifty-two-year marriage reads as vividly as a novel. Vera, both beautiful and brilliant, is its outsized heroine a woman who loves as deeply and intelligently as did the great romantic heroines of Austen and Tolstoy. Stacy Schiff's "Vera" is a triumph of the biographical form." When, in her twenties, Franny begins an affair with the legendary author Leon Posen and tells him about her family, the story of her siblings is no longer hers to control. Their childhood Mindfulness for Worriers: Overcome Everyday Stress and Anxiety download epub becomes the basis for his wildly successful book, ultimately forcing them to come to terms with their losses, their guilt, and the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another.

GCSE English Shakespeare Text Guide - Macbeth download PDF Who wants Madeline Westfield dead? And why? Remarkable . . . With this book [Wolitzer] has surpassed herself. "The New York Times Book Review" Captain Alan Lewrie returns in Dewey Lambdin's tenth roaring adventure on the high seas. This time, it's off to a failing British intervention on the ultra-rich French colony of Saint Domingue, wracked by an utterly cruel and bloodthirsty slave rebellion led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, the future father of Haitian independence. Beset and distracted though he might be, it will take all of Lewrie's pluck, daring, skill, and his usual tongue-in-cheek deviousness, to navigate all the perils in a sea of grey.

It has been twenty years since Kurt Cobain died by his own hand in April 1994; it was an act of will that typified his short, angry, inspired life. Veteran music journalist Charles R. Cross fuses his intimate knowledge of the Seattle music scene with his deep compassion for his subject in this extraordinary story of artistic brilliance and the pain that extinguished it. Based on more than four hundred interviews; four years of research; Narrative Exposure Therapy: A Short-Term Treatment for Traumatic Stress Disorders download ebook exclusive access to Cobain's unpublished diaries, lyrics, and family photos; and a wealth of documentation, Heavier Than Heaven traces Cobain's life from his early days in a double-wide trailer outside of Aberdeen, Washington, to his rise to fame, success, and the adulation of a generation. Charles Cross has written a preface for this new edition, in which he recounts some of the events regarding Kurt Cobain and this book in the past two decades since his death.

Narrative Exposure Therapy: A Short-Term Treatment for Traumatic Stress Disorders

Description

Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) is a successful and culturally universal intervention for the treatment of survivors of multiple and severe traumatic events, such as organized violence, torture, war, rape, and childhood abuse. Field tests in contexts of ongoing adversity and disaster areas, as well as controlled trials in various countries, have shown that three to six sessions can be sufficient to provide considerable relief. The new edition of the clearly structured and easy-to-follow NET manual now includes the latest insights and new treatments for dissociation and social pain. The first part of the book describes the theoretical background. The second part shows how to use the NET approach step by step, with practical advice and tools, including how to deal with special issues (such as dealing with challenging moments, defense mechanisms for the therapist, and ethical issues). Appendices include an informed consent form, checklists for the therapist, and FAQs.
